چکیده

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three levels of supplement on forage intake and animal performance of early weaned calves grazing rye-ryegrass pastures from January to May. Treatments were three levels of concentrate (1, 1.5, and 2% of body weight [BW]), and animals were 90-d-old Angus-crossbred early weaned calves. Calf ADG increased from 1.6 to 1.9 lb/d as supplementation rate increased from 1 to 2%. Forage intake decreased with increasing supplementation. Increasing the amount of concentrate fed did not result in proportional increases in calf gain, making the 1% treatment the most economically viable.

Winter-annual pasture as a supplement for beef cows.

In each of two experiments, 120 pregnant beef cows were stratified by body condition score, BW, breed, and age, randomly divided into six groups of 20, and assigned to one of six 5.1-ha bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) pastures (two replicates/ treatment) in early January to evaluate the use of winter-annual pasture as a supplement. All cows in Exp. 1 and 2 had ad libitum access to be...

Early weaning beef calves.

Early weaning is a management practice that reduces grazing pressure on pastures by decreasing the nutrient requirements of cows. Calves that are weaned early are relatively efficient at converting feed to gain, and can weigh as much, or more than, calves allowed to remain with their dams until a conventional weaning age is reached. Balanced diets with excellent physical, chemical, and palatabi...

Effect of early weaning on the performance of three-year-old, first-calf beef heifers and calves reared in the subtropics.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of early weaning fall-born calves on heifer and calf performance in Florida. Over two consecutive years, 3-yr-old Braford and Brahman x Angus first-calf heifers were assigned randomly to one of two treatments; early-weaned (EW, n = 20 and 30 for yr 1 and 2, respectively) and normal-weaned (NW, n = 20 and 38 for yr 1 and 2, respect...

Food Plots for Beef Calves: Effectively Using Creep Grazing

Small food plots are commonly used for managing wildlife and are often planted with high quality forages like ryegrass, clovers, chicory, or even alfalfa. These plots supplement wildlife nutritional needs during times when forage and browse is short or has poor quality. For example, alfalfa, lab lab, or millet food plots can provide high quality forage during summer months when whitetail does a...

Mineral Concentrations of Annual Cool Season Pasture Forages in North Florida during the Winter-Spring Grazing Season: II. Trace Minerals

Concentrations of selected trace minerals (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Co, Se) were determined from annual cool-season grass pasture forages over four consecutive winter-spring grazing seasons (2001-2005). Twice monthly forage samples were taken from eight experimental pastures used in beef cattle grazing trials. Two, 2-yr experiments were conducted; animal and pasture data were reported previously. Each e...
